Super-sized avocado imports building up to the big game
The U.S. is on track to import 300 million pounds of avocados in the four weeks leading up to this Sunday's big game, according to Avocados From Mexico. That's the highest volume ever, 20 percent above average for the period and 20 million more than initially projected.
Roughly a decade ago, importing 160 million avocados in the month leading up to the big game was considered a massive success. Driving today’s historic demand are young Americans, who have more than doubled their avocado consumption in the last 10 years, and robust omnichannel marketing efforts around peak U.S. gathering occasions.
“Delivering 300 million pounds of avocados to our partners and consumers in just four weeks is a remarkable milestone and a testament to what is possible when an entire binational supply chain moves with purpose and precision,” said Alvaro Luque, CEO of Avocados From Mexico.
“This achievement reflects the seamless collaboration of growers, packers, importers and customers working together to meet unprecedented demand. We are proud of the role Avocados From Mexico continues to play in building consumer appetite and expanding the category, supported by a reliable, year-round supply from Mexico. The U.S. avocado market continues to grow and this momentum reinforces the strength, resilience and long-term potential of our shared industry,” he continued.
When visiting retailers between now and Sunday, shoppers will continue to find promotional bins and bags with this year's campaign imagery. They'll be filled with preferred sizes: Bags of 60s and bins brimming with larger 48s thanks to this year’s favorable growing conditions.
To inspire Americans to celebrate together with guac on the table, Avocados From Mexico curated 32 recipes for each pro football team, inspired by local cuisines. For example, this weekend, consumers might whip up Seattle and New England guac.
