Market Minute: Boost sales volume by promoting blueberries
People have been eating blueberries for over 13,000 years. Blueberries are native to North America, and the U.S. is the world’s largest producer of cultivated blueberries, with Maine and Michigan leading the way.
While berries in general are very healthy and contain many nutritional benefits, blueberries are known to be one of the healthiest fruits due to being rich in antioxidants.
The consumer trend is growing with 54 percent purchasing fresh blueberries. Jumbo size blueberries are in greater demand with consumer purchases at 45 percent.
The production and supply of blueberries are starting to improve coming out of Mexico and Peru. There are some demand and supply cost conditions as a portion of Peruvian product is being shipped to Asia and Europe. Those issues should be resolved as production begins to increase from other growing areas. Make sure to check with your blueberry suppliers for more information.
Display blueberries combined with other berries with a nice large visual display to attract shoppers and drive some lofty sales. Offer multiple package sizes and highlight the values on signs to inform customers about blueberry health benefits. Make sure to promote them with some strong advertising campaigns.
