Market Minute: Plenty of new crop onions are ready for merchandising
Do onions make you cry when slicing or cutting them? Just cut them under running water and your eyes won’t tear. It works most of the time. If it doesn’t work, wear goggles.
Good weather during the growing season has helped develop some of the best onion crops with great sizing and colors. The current moderate demand and steady market has sustained pricing and makes it a great time for ad promotions.
The new red, white and yellow onion harvest is in full swing with excellent quality. The demand is moderate and market steady being shipped out of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wisconsin and imports from Peru. There are also some outstanding quality bagged and loose sweet onions coming out of the farms in Nevada.
The best way to move massive amounts of onions is to set up some large aggressive end cap or free-standing displays. A nice eye-catching blend of red, white and yellow onions along with some sweets will always draw customers over to the display to make purchases. If space allows, use some of the original shipping cartons to waterfall the onions onto the boxes for an attractive presentation.
Check early with your onion suppliers to secure some good deals for those ad promotions while the opportunity is right.
