The OSO Sweet brand’s roots stretch back to the early 1990s, with unique sweet onions imported from Chile. A recognized and loved name, it grew exponentially, weaving in OSO Sweet onions from the USA and Peru, becoming a household favorite.
In 2018, Michael Cutler decided to expand their sweet program through their Hillcrest Produce Company and made an electrifying move with the purchase of the popular OSO Sweet onion brand, filling the missing link in their already renowned sweet onion program.
We have packing locations for Peru onions in Claxton, GA, Goshen, NY, Commerce, CA, Deerfield Beach, FL and Philadelphia, PA giving us the ability to provide premium quality onions across the nation. But it’s not just about distribution; we also have dedicated personnel on the ground in Peru, constantly working with growers and sending real-time crop reports back to headquarters. This is a vital part of any onion program. The ability to provide real-time updates is critical to providing our customers with immediate updates on any challenges with onion quality or availability.
Food safety is paramount, with stringent FSVP protocols in place with all our growers for all imported produce. Our Peru program, running from late July through March, showcases our grower’s commitment to quality.
We are finishing up our Vidalia onion season in Vidalia, Georgia, but have begun packing Peru onions in Pennsylvania. Once our Vidalia season comes to a close, we will begin packing Peru sweet onions at all of our other locations. Our season is off to a solid start and quality is impeccable. Peru has had excellent growing conditions, and we anticipate large volume shipping from Peru for the 2025-2026 season. There may be a possibility in shortages of containers due to blueberry and grape production during the onion time frame. This issue is a moving target annually as a large amount of product is shipped from Peru into the US. We are unsure as to how it will unfold this season as world events have been very fluid.
One of the challenges with this year’s program is the addition of managing the new 10 percent tariff. This is an unknown area for all Peru onion growers as they have not had to manage a growing season with tariffs in the past. We have been working actively with all our local Customs Brokers and our growers to ensure the most smooth transition to implement the tariff program.
