Shuman Farms excited about upcoming Vidalia onion season
At Shuman Farms, the company is always looking ahead to how it can grow and evolve, and 2025 is shaping up to be a big year.
“Our biggest excitement right now is the upcoming Vidalia onion season and continuing to build on the momentum we’ve created through our Shuman Farms University initiative,” said John Shuman, president and CEO of Shuman Farms. “Educating our retailer partners’ produce teams about Vidalia onions has been a priority for us, and this year we’re refreshing our digital content and resources to take that to the next level.”
Vidalia onions are the heart and soul of its business. For three generations the company has been dedicated to growing, packing and shipping premium sweet onions to retailers across the country.
“The Vidalia onion category is not just important to our company — it’s a key driver of the entire sweet onion segment,” Shuman said. “As a company, we’re committed to ensuring that Vidalia onions continue to be a household staple and a high-performing category for retailers.”
Every year, Shuman Farms plants, grows and harvests Vidalia onions, working closely with its team of dedicated growers to produce the highest-quality crop possible.
“In recent years, we’ve seen the Vidalia onion category evolve with more consumer interest in seasonal products, as well as a strong demand for premium, branded sweet onions,” Shuman said. “We’ve responded by focusing on innovative marketing programs, increased transparency and investments in our infrastructure to maintain surety of supply.”
Shuman Farms is also looking forward to leveraging its expanded infrastructure following its 2024 Generation Farms acquisition, which doubled its acreage and has given the company the ability to increase its storage, packing capacity and overall efficiency.
“Our ability to control our entire process, from seed selection to harvest, packing and distribution, gives us an advantage,” Shuman said. “But beyond the basics, we know that educating consumers and retailers is critical. That’s why we continue to invest in programs like Shuman Farms University, which helps produce managers and retail teams feel confident in selling and promoting Vidalia onions.
“The key to strong partnerships is trust, communication and shared success,” Shuman continued. “We work closely with our retail partners to develop customized marketing programs, in-store promotions and digital content that drive category sales. By educating produce teams, providing high-quality product and supporting retailers with strong promotional campaigns, we ensure that Vidalia onions remain a top-selling item in the produce department.”
Throughout 2025, Shuman Farms will stay focused on continuing to invest in its infrastructure, marketing and sustainability efforts.
“With the expansion of our operations following the Generation Farms acquisition, we are now better positioned than ever to serve our customers with quality, consistency and reliability,” Shuman said. “We’re also excited about the ongoing success of our retail and digital marketing programs, which are helping to grow awareness and demand for Vidalia onions across all consumer segments. As we look ahead, our goal remains the same: to deliver premium sweet onions, build strong partnerships and drive category growth for the long term.”
