New Nogales firm to specialize in distribution to the East Coast
Humberto (Beto) Moreno, 29, who was previously with the Nogales, AZ, office of Hammonton, NJ-based Frank Donio Inc., has started his own company, Arizona Mixers & Fresh Produce LLC, in Nogales, in partnership with a brother, Mauro Moreno, 33, and Charles Slack, 40.
Mr. Moreno told The Produce News in a telephone interview Jan. 13 that he opened the new company Dec. 31, and will specialize in distributing and brokering tomatoes and Mexican vegetables, primarily to customers on the East Coast.
At Donio, Mr. Moreno had worked as a buyer and salesman, servicing chainstore accounts, many of which, he said, had stringent product specifications.
Mr. Moreno started his produce career 18 years ago as a shipping-point inspector, then worked for Los Angeles-based Tanimura Distributing and seasonally for Los Pinos Produce in Chula Vista, CA.
After seven years at Donio, he decided he wanted to open his own company and experience the benefits of business ownership "along with the headaches."
Mr. Moreno's partners have purchased a property in the Rio Rico Business Park north of Nogales that serves as the offices and refrigerated warehouse for the new company. Mr. Moreno's brother, who also owns a truck brokerage, Aviva International in Nogales, will be handling transportation and logistics for Arizona Mixers through that company, he said.
Mr. Slack, an attorney in Tempe, AZ, is a financial partner and is not involved in the day-to-day operations of Arizona Mixers, he said.
