Name change captures new direction for Klamath Basin
The former Klamath Basin Fresh Direct has officially changed its name to Klamath Basin Fresh Organics. Chairman Dan Chin said the business is solely focused on organic production, and the name change makes that direction clear.
“We did some conventional potatoes in the past,” he told The Produce News July 30. “But we’re all organic now.”
Klamath Basin found a niche with its organic fingerlings and specialty potatoes. The cooperative’s growers are located in south-central Oregon and northern California and have been
moving premium organic potatoes into the pipeline since 2001. Part of its business philosophy involves a commitment to agricultural sustainability.
Although some of the cooperative’s growers are producing conventional potatoes, they will be marketed through a different channel, Mr. Chin stated. One of those growers is Wong Potatoes, located in Klamath Falls, OR. “We’re working toward the Wong shed being all organic,” Mr. Chin stated.
He was asked how this year’s potato crop is progressing. “I think we’re on track for a good fresh market crop,” Mr. Chin replied. Earlier in the season, there were some concerns about water. But he said good snowpack in March and April meant irrigation water was available as farmers moved into production.
Although potato acreage in the Klamath River Basin declined approximately 4 percent this season, Mr. Chin said acreage for Klamath Basin Fresh Organics’ growers actually increased. “As long as the market is accepting our potatoes and we have good demand, the trend will continue,” he stated about future prospects.
While Klamath Basin has typically sold product along the West Coast, that trend is changing too. “Last year, we did go national pretty heavy,” Mr. Chin commented. Specialty potatoes were shipped to Maryland, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Colorado. “We covered a pretty good chunk of the country last year,” he said. Some export opportunities have also opened up in Taiwan and Singapore.
