“In addition to our 100 percent daily value vitamin D mushrooms in all white and brown packages, Monterey has recently introduced a new fresh stuffed mushroom line,” said Joe Caldwell, vice president of Monterey Mushrooms Inc., headquartered in Watsonville, CA. “These are currently in limited distribution. They include spinach artichoke, onion cheddar and pizza-flavored varieties in both Portabellas and Baby Bella options.”
Monterey’s new sustainable biodegradable packaging now accounts for over 80 percent of all of the company’s retail purchases. This package informs the consumer of new ideas for using fresh mushrooms and it includes recipes and nutritional information on every package of what Caldwell refers to as this “superfood.”
He also noted that Monterey Mushrooms has recently expanded its distribution business — Monterey Logistics — with new tractors and trailers.
He also announced a new staff member at Monterey.
“We recently announced the hiring of Andrea Allen as the Southeast sales manager,” he said. “Andrea is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will have sales responsibilities throughout the southeastern U.S.”
Caldwell explained that the mushroom category continues its steady growth as consumers continue to discover the value that fresh mushrooms add to their meals.
A key trend is in organic sales, he said. “While organic mushrooms do add cost, more and more consumers are demanding the organic certification and are willing to pay for it. We will continue to see double-digit growth in organic sales for the foreseeable future. Monterey is currently expanding its certified organic production to meet this demand.”
