Mini-sweet pepper pack is in trials by Hearty Fresh
Hearty Fresh Inc. is conducting packaging trials with a Michigan grower to pack mini sweet peppers, according to Nick Huizinga, general manager of the firm, which is located in Byron Center, MI. There are test plots of the peppers growing this spring. If the trial works, Hearty Fresh may expand the product to a year-round offering.
The company sources from growers throughout many parts of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Hearty Fresh was launched by Nick’s father, Randy Huizinga, in 1993. The grower-packer-distributor evolved and now value-added produce packaging is the leading business segment for the firm, which is located in a temperature-controlled warehouse in Byron Center. The custom repacker also packs its own “Hearty Fresh” label.
Hearty Fresh began packaging in pouches a year ago. That business has flourished and is ever-expanding to new types of pouches, Nick Huizinga said. The pouches first met resistance but now “our one- and two-pound packs are very popular because consumers can grab and go,” Nick Huizinga said. Trays and shrink-wrap packages are also popular, but “we sell more and more pouches.”
Hearty Fresh ships to customers in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
The 100,000-square-foot Hearty Fresh facility is Primus- and GFS food-safety-certified.
