Melissa’s Ojai Pixie tangerines a consumer favorite
Grown in the rich soils and unique microclimates of California’s Ojai Valley, Melissa’s Ojai Pixie tangerines are something special.
Ojai is one of the world’s only East-West valleys, so the sun literally shines on the Pixie trees all day, creating the rich flavor consumers say “tastes like sunshine.” These delicious tangerines are tended by members of the Ojai Pixie Growers Association, a collection of over 50 family farms that all maintain small- to medium-sized groves. Melissa’s is a proud partner with the association since 1999, and company representatives make many trips to Ojai each year to check in on the fruit.
Seedless and easy to peel, the Pixies’ high sugar content makes them the season’s sweetest tangerine. This low-acid fruit is juicy, leaving a lingering ambrosial taste on the tongue that makes it difficult to eat just one. The last tangerine of the season harvested, the Pixie doesn’t ripen until March and continues in good supply through May. This season Melissa’s offers Pixies in handy one-pound grab-n-go tote bags, as well as a 25-pound bulk case.
