MAS Melons & Grapes expanding aggressively
MAS Melons & Grapes LLC is aggressively expanding its produce volume. Miguel (Miky) Suarez Sr., the firm’s majority partner, has two sons — Miguel (Mikee) Suarez (Jr.) and Santiago Suarez — in the business. Thus, he has a special motivation to see the firm expand to even greater heights. “We have a lot of potential to grow in honeydew, watermelon, asparagus, broccoli, and grapes,” Miky Suarez said. MAS’s grape and asparagus volume will also be rising in the very near future.
Suarez noted that honeydew is the firm’s largest-volume commodity. This winter the honeydew came from Colima and Michoacán. In February the deal expanded to Nayarit.
The firm’s watermelon and honeydew production in Colima is also building in February, he said.
For years MAS has exported honeydew to Japan. The Japan program has expanded to broccoli, which MAS sources from Guanajuato growers. Weather problems set back Guanajuato broccoli by two months, but those exports to Japan began in mid-January.
