MAS continues fast track growth
Hurricane Patricia set back, by one week, the Colima honeydew harvest that was scheduled to be marketed by MAS Melons & Grapes, LLC, located here.
There is an irony in the schedule, because these melons were planted a week earlier than normal to push a late-December harvest, said Miguel (Miky) Suarez, who is the company’s 52-percent owner. “So, we’re back to normal in the first week of January.”
The honeydews were planted a week before Hurricane Patricia came ashore on Oct. 22. The seedlings planted on farms around the Colima towns of Tecoman and Areria were replanted after the hurricane wiped out the young initial crop.
Unless farms in the northern Sonora town of Caborca escape frost, MAS shipments of honeydew, watermelon, cucumbers and various squashes will end in mid-December. If the area avoids the cold, those fields could be harvested throughout December.
In Guanajuato, MAS planned to begin harvesting broccoli for export to Japan about Nov. 10.
For MAS, avocados are a 12-month deal.
Last season, MAS’ asparagus deal increased in volume by 40 percent. The shipping season runs from early January through the first week in April.
