Manfredi Cold Storage offers new shipping options
Idaho potato shippers have new transportation and distribution options through Manfredi Cold Storage, based near Philadelphia in Kennett Square, PA, which is known for its mushroom industry.
Manfredi Cold Storage has a railroad spur and private service from two rail lines. The spur allows fresh produce to be discharged directly into the enormous, modern warehouse without breaking the cold chain.
Frank Manfredi, president of Manfredi Cold Storage, said in June he very successfully received Idaho potatoes by rail.
From this facility, Manfredi offers shippers two options.
First, sister company Manfredi Logistics, with a modern fleet of tractor-trailers, can distribute Idaho or other products shipped by rail directly to Eastern customers.
Second, Manfredi Cold Storage can provide immediate cross-docking for transfer and delivery.
Manfredi’s rail spur is served by both CSX and Norfolk-Southern railroads. The choice of service puts Manfredi customers in a competitive situation for rail cars. Service to Manfredi is handled by East Penn Railroad, a short-line provider. Representing East Penn for Manfredi is Frank Sauer, the firm’s vice president. Sauer earlier in his career was a leader in a short-line railroad service in the Northwest.
Sauer said the Manfredi rail spur will receive the industry’s largest, heaviest and most modern railcars. Delivery to Manfredi from the Northwest takes a dozen days.
In the 1970s, Frank and his brother John Manfredi created this cold storage business from their father’s Kennett Square mushroom farm. What has become The Manfredi Cos.’ Manfredi Logistics Service involves a fleet of modern reefer tractor-trailers to supply East Coast customers within a matter of hours.
Should customers need repacking or re-packaging before shipping from Kennett Square, Manfredi sister company International Repack is a new, spacious repacking facility equipped to perform virtually any repacking service.
Manfredi Cold Storage operates 425,000 square feet of cold storage warehousing, with the capacity to hold 33,000 pallets.
Manfredi said Northwestern shipper demand for his services will be dependent in part on truck rates and availability. But beyond providing broader transportation options, his facility frees shipper storage space in the Northwest.
