Majority of Columbine volume is late season varieties
The fall season is of particular importance to Columbine Vineyards in Delano, CA, “for the basic reason that that is where the heaviest volume is going to hit us,” said Anthony Stetson, sales manager in an interview with The Produce News Aug. 4. “For this company, the majority of our volume is in the later varieties” such as Scarlet Royal, Crimson, Autumn King, Black Globe, Red Globe and “of course” Columbine’s proprietary Holiday red seedless variety.
“Those are our predominant volume varieties” which are harvested from September through November and sometimes into December, he said. “Last year, we picked until Dec. 4, because we didn’t get a freeze until then.”
This year, “it looks like we are picking grapes at a pretty fast rate,” Stetson said. “The way volumes are coming off and the way things are moving, we could conceivably see the season coming to an end, as far as the harvest goes,” earlier than usual. “It could come very quickly.
Columbine has young plantings coming into heavier production “on all of those varieties,” Stetson said. “In general, our volume is going to be up a pretty good number.”
Most of the increase will be in the Holiday and Autumn King varieties, he said.
“We have ample supplies and excellent quality to look forward to,” he added.
