Little Leaf doubling production, much to the delight of fan base
Little Leaf Farms will double its supply of greenhouse-grown lettuces following the completion of the expansion of its greenhouse facility. And that’s sure to be welcome news to the throngs of fans who take to social media each day to sing the praises of the company that produces locally grown lettuces for the greater New England area.
In the Little Leaf Farms greenhouse in Devens, MA, are Pieter Slaman, head grower; Tim Cunniff, co-founder and executive vice president of sales and marketing; and Paul Sellew, co-founder and president and chief executive officer.“We are finding that people [in New England] try our products because they are local, but they rebuy because of the quality,” said Tim Cunniff, a co-founder and executive vice president of sales and marketing for the Devens, MA-based greenhouse grower. “We’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the level of passion they have shown for our product. We knew people would like it, but we didn’t know just how much they would love it.”
Cunniff points to the company’s social media accounts, which he said are flooded with posts praising consumers’ love for the products. He said they reach a peak on Fridays, when Little Leaf posts new photos under the hashtag #fanlovefridays.
With all the excitement for its products, fans should be happy to know that the company is in the process of adding 2.5 acres under glass, which will double its production, according to Cunniff, who said the company is targeting early April to sell the first crop from the new facility.
Currently, Little Leaf produces three SKUs for retail — a baby Green Leaf pack, a baby Red Leaf pack and a spring mix, with Red Leaf, Green Leaf and Arugula. All are packed in four-ounce clamshells. Cunniff said the company is considering additional SKUs for its line and may launch bigger sizes, like family packs. “We are constantly doing trials to look at other products, but for now we are focusing on doing what we do best.”
Little Leaf’s products are sold predominantly in New England, where they are carried in more than 800 stores. The company also does a limited foodservice business, which accounts for around 20 percent of its overall sales.
Operations are state-of-the-art, with the latest greenhouse technology in place. “Everything is grown without pesticides or herbicides, the lettuce is never wet and no product is ever touched by humans, so the food-safety aspects are all in place,” he said. “We also have the latest heating and cooling systems and lighting systems. So the best technology plus our experience yields top-quality product.”
Little Leaf Farms was founded in 2015 by Cunniff and Paul Sellew, president and chief executive officer, who previously worked together at Backyard Farms, a greenhouse tomato grower in Maine. Joining them in the management ranks at Little Leaf are Pieter Slaman, head grower, and Matthew Meisel, chief financial officer.
“There are currently a lot of greenhouse projects going on out there, but we have identified what we think is a good opportunity to carve out our niche, and we are focusing on what we think is in demand,” said Cunniff. “We’re in a rhythm now with our production and we look forward to bringing more product to market with the completion of the new greenhouse project.”
