Kroger apparently selling Northern California Ralph's stores
Kroger Co., the nation's largest grocery company, appears to have put its Ralph's Grocery outlets in Northern California on the market.
The Sacramento Bee reported the move Jan. 14, citing unnamed sources. A check of Ralph's stores in Capitola, CA, and Del Rey Oaks, CA, by The Produce News backed up the Bee report.
Employees at the Capitola store who requested anonymity told The Produce News Jan. 20 that they had received word of the stores going on the market the previous week. One employee in the Capitola store said that about 40 stores are going on the market, including about a dozen Cala and Bell stores in the San Francisco area. Cala and Bell are a division of Ralph's.
Ralph's spokesman Terry O'Neil told The Produce News on Jan. 23 that that the company had "no comment."
One unnamed employee in the Capitola store said that there were a number of longtime employees in the store particularly concerned with whether the store would remain a unionized store in the event of a sale.
The Capitola store in Santa Cruz County has about 50 employees; another Ralph's in Santa Cruz County -- in the town of Freedom -- has about 100 employees.
