Knutzen renamed to U.S. agricultural committee
Skagit Valley potato grower Roger Knutzen has been renamed to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Fruits & Vegetables by Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman.
"American agriculture continues to play a critical role in our agenda of opening markets and expanding opportunities around the world," said Mr. Portman. The advice offered by these committee members will help ensure that Americans are competing on a level playing field and have the opportunity to sell their world class goods in overseas markets.
The ATACs offer technical advice and information on specific commodities. Congress established the advisory committees in 1974 to ensure a private-sector voice in establishing U.S. agricultural trade policy objectives to reflect U.S. commercial and economic interests. USDA and USTR jointly manage the committees, and current members will serve until May 2007.
The Burlington, WA, farmer has served on the fruits and vegetables ATAC since the Clinton administration. Knutzen Farms has grown, packed and shipped red, white, yellow and chipping potatoes in the Skagit Valley for five generations. Roger Knutzen has been active in agricultural concerns for many years, serving in the Farm Bureau, as a soil conservation and drainage district commissioner, and as president of the U.S. Potato Board.
