Julia Stewart joins PMA staff
NEWARK, DE -- Produce Marketing Association has announced that Julia Stewart has joined the association staff to manage its public relations and crisis communications activities.
As the association's new public relations director, the former Julia Daly will work with PMA staff and management to direct the association's integrated communications with members and other publics, serve as a media spokesperson, and direct PMA's crisis prevention, mitigation and management activities.
"Julia adds another tremendous industry asset to the PMA staff at a time when the association's communications with the industry and on the industry's behalf are growing increasingly important," PMA Senior Vice President Lorna Christie said in a Feb. 14 statement and referring to the previous week's announcement that Robert Whitaker will soon join PMA as its first chief scientific officer. "She is well known, well respected and well liked by the industry for her sharp strategic and tactical communications abilities and her professionalism."
Ms. Stewart brings to the position more than 15 years of experience in produce industry promotional and crisis communications, gained in the apple industry and most recently as an industry consultant.
"While my consulting work and clients have been incredible, I couldn't pass up the chance to work for the good of the entire produce industry, and with an organization as influential as PMA," Ms. Stewart said in the statement. "PMA is involved in such a broad range of critical subjects, from helping the industry to address food safety and harness new technologies to increasing Americans' produce consumption, I'm thrilled to bring my skill set to the table on the industry's behalf."
Most recently, Ms. Stewart managed a communications consultancy specializing in marketing public relations and crisis communications -- Clarity Communications LLC -- which she founded in 2004. Her clients hailed primarily from the produce industry or produce industry alumni.
Prior to founding Clarity, Ms. Stewart was vice president of public relations for U.S. Apple Association in McLean, VA. For USApple, she directed the association's consumer outreach activities to promote U.S. apples and apple products, including founding the apple industry's nutrition research and promotion program. She also directed the apple industry's crisis communications activities on issues ranging from food safety to biotechnology, often working in coordination with PMA and other industry organizations. Her industry service has included chairing the Produce for Better Health Foundation's communications committee.
Prior to joining USApple, Ms. Stewart was a crisis communications specialist with a Washington, DC-based crisis management consulting firm. She also held communication positions with the American Forest Council, the communications arm of the National Forest Products Association, and was an economic researcher for that association (now part of the American Forest and Paper Association). She earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Virginia.
Ms. Stewart is based in Ashburn, VA, a suburb of Washington, where she lives with her son, Daniel, age 12, and her daughter, Caroline, age 8.
She can be reached by telephone at 302/738-7100, ext. 3008, or via e-mail at [email protected].
