J. Marchini & Son opens sales office in Salinas
SALINAS, CA -- J. Marchini & Son has long had radicchio growing in fields in Salinas and nearby Watsonville and Hollister. To complement that effort, the Le Grand, CA-based company, located 30 miles east of Fresno, opened a sales office in Salinas June 19.
Sales Manager Jenny Nelson is the lone representative in the new Salinas office. "The move has been planned for some time," Ms. Nelson said. "It's been time to spread our wings."
Ms. Nelson has been with the company for more than six years and has been sales manager for two years.
The company is known as one of the original radicchio growers in the United States, and that is still its major focus today. J. Marchini & Son was founded in 1989, but its roots go as far back as 1920. Marc Marchini -- a sales coordinator in J. Marchini & Son's main office -- is a fourth-generation family member in the company.
J. Marchini & Son grows, packs and ships its products. "We do everything from the seedling on up," Ms. Nelson said.
In addition to having radicchio year round, J. Marchini & Son has treviso, fennel and Tuscan cabbage year round and has the seasonal items castelfranco, puntarella and cardoon. Its radicchio is grown in Salinas and surrounding areas June through October, and near its home base November through May.
Last year the company had a small-scale harvest of Black Mission figs in Le Grand, which has been ramped up there to 300 acres of both conventional and organic fruit.
About 50 percent of J. Marchini & Son's commodities is used for processing, 30 percent is exported and the other 20 percent goes to foodservice and wholesale.
The company's main label is "Joe's Premium," but it also handles custom packs.
In November, J. Marchini & Son hired Elena Jimenez to oversee the company's quality-control operations.
