Hudson River Fruit Distributors’offering exciting new apple products
Hudson River Fruit Distributors, a leading Northeast apple distributor located in Milton, NY, is now in its fourth generation of family ownership and management.
Alisha Albinder, operations manager, and fourth generation family member, told The Produce News that the company recently completed installation of a new Durand-Wayland high-speed bagger.
“The bagger has auto-tray fillers and a defect sorter,” said Albinder. “Installation was completed this summer, and it will be in full operation this fall. We replaced an older bagger, and this one will enable us to double our production.”
The company launched its new “Lil Chief” apples one year ago, and the item was met with great enthusiasm by retailers and consumers alike. The small kid-friendly bag contains three-pounds of small-sized apples, a perfect fit for children’s’ small hands and big appetites.
“While ‘Lil Chief’ can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a healthy snack, its target market is children age five to 13,” explained Albinder. “The item encourages healthy eating habits beginning at a young age.”
She also pointed out that apples keep people fuller longer, while providing the necessary antioxidants and minerals to keep adults and kids strong and healthy.
“While the small apples are a delicious and nutritious snack, the new colorful and resealable bag is a perfect size to keep on the counter for grab on the go,” added Albinder.
Another new item the company is excited about launching this season is its new “Red Chief Juice Blends” juicer apples. The four-pound upright bag is economically friendly and packed full of beneficial vitamins and minerals.
“Juicing and blending are a great way to get nutrients and vitamins people may not be getting from their normal meal time choices,” said Albinder. “Red Chief Juice Blends” are available in four varieties; Honeycrisp, Gala, Empire and Red Delicious. On the back of the stand-up pouch are four recipes that include suggestions for a breakfast go-to, a morning snack or a yummy dinner side-dish.
HRFD also acquired a new 50-acre farm last summer. Added to its existing farm, the company now has a total of 400-acres of farmable land.
“We planted 35,000 high-density trees on the new acreage this summer,” said Albinder. “The majority are Gala, Fuji, Cortland and Red Delicious. The trees will be in production next fall.”
She noted that this year’s crop is in excellent condition.
“All of our apples, including the Honeycrisp, SnapDragon and Zestar look really good this year,” she said. “We’ve had excellent growing weather and we’re looking forward to a great season.”
