Walmart and Smith’s Farm joined together to shine the spotlight on the value of locally grown produce and the farmers who make it possible.
As part of Walmart’s nationwide initiative to highlight local growers, the retail giant celebrated its partnership with Smith’s as well as state and local representatives in Maine. The Sept. 24 event included a production tour at Smith’s Farm’s Westfield, ME, facility and lunch featuring the best of the season's fresh offerings.
The event underscored Walmart’s ongoing commitment to sourcing fresh, local fruits and vegetables while celebrating Smith’s contributions to the Maine economy and agricultural community, highlighting the importance of supporting Maine’s local growers.
In attendance were local officials, including Maine Agriculture Commissioner Amanda Beal, U.S. Rep. Jared Goldman and U.S. Sen. Angus King, both from Maine, and State Sen. Susan Bernard, along with representatives from Smith’s Farm and Walmart.
Remarks in support of Maine agriculture and this partnership were given by USDA State Director John Butera and a statement from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins was ready by Tara Smith, CEO of Smith’s Farm.

“Partnerships like ours with Walmart allow us to keep delivering fresh, high-quality produce to families across the country while keeping investment and jobs right here in Maine,” said Smith. “We are proud to be part of Walmart’s effort to highlight the impact local suppliers have on their communities.”
Walmart is America’s largest seller of fruits and vegetables. Last year, the company sourced $1.5 billion in locally grown produce (produce sold and grown within the same state). By prioritizing local suppliers, Walmart helps foster stronger community connections and civic participation, while also contributing to job creation, economic growth and community development.
“We know quality is the biggest driver when selecting produce, which is why we source as close to the customer as possible, without sacrificing quality,” said Chris Buchanan, director, public affairs and government relations at Walmart. “As we celebrate Smith’s Farm and other local farmers in Maine, we remain committed to buying the locally grown produce that support and create local jobs. It makes sense for our customers, our communities and our company.”
As part of Walmart’s mission to deliver every day low prices on fresh produce, the company helped customers save $1.6 billion on fresh fruits and vegetables in FY25 alone. Fresh produce is available in store, for pick up and for delivery to 93 percent of the U.S. population.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to excellence, adaptability, and service-values both Walmart and Smith’s Farm prioritize in getting fresh produce from farm to table.
The Smith family history spans generations and dates to the early days of Maine. The company has evolved its programs to include growing operations in New York, Georgia and Florida, where it also supports local offerings.
Known for its commitment to quality, innovation and community, Smith’s Farm provides fresh broccoli, cauliflower and a wide range of seasonal vegetables to customers nationwide.
In Maine, Walmart serves customers at 25 retail units and online through Walmart Online Grocery and Walmart.com. The retailer employs 8,132 associates in Maine and supports local businesses, spending $114.8 million with Maine suppliers in fiscal year 2024 and supporting 5,819 Maine supplier jobs.
Walmart continues to be a leader in employment opportunity, sustainability and corporate philanthropy. In fiscal year 2024, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation contributed more than $12.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to local nonprofits in Maine.
