Leadership Program spotlight: Belinda Van Schaik
IFPA’s Leadership Program is in its 29th year, providing a year-long leadership journey for 12 industry professionals. The program focuses on four fundamental pillars: leadership development, business relationships, government and public affairs and media and public communications.
Since it’s launch in 1995, and due to the generous support of founding sponsor, Corteva Agriscience, more than 300 produce industry members have graduated from this exclusive program. This year’s group of leaders make up the Class 30 and includes Belinda Van Schaik, head of marketing at Hort Innovation, she was asked to reflect on what leadership means to her as she goes through this program.
Here are her thoughts:
“Leadership to me, is about creating an environment where people can do their best work and feel inspired by the impact we can achieve together. It’s being intentional in bringing together the diverse strengths of a team — aligning capability, energy and ambition toward a shared outcome that is greater than any individual contribution.
“Leadership also requires courage, applied with disciplined thought. The leaders who have most inspired me combine strategic clarity with the confidence to challenge the status quo and make welljudged, decisive choices. It is this balance of courage and considered decisionmaking that drives stepchange performance and positions organizations for longterm success. As a leader, I see it as my role to model this mindset, encouraging bold thinking while remaining anchored to purpose and outcomes.
“Finally, leadership is about leading self, others and the organization with the end in mind. It means staying openminded, committed to continuous improvement and consciously strengthening your own capability while investing in the growth of those around you. At its best, leadership becomes a force that not only delivers results, but also builds momentum and lasting impact.”
This year, Belinda was also recognized by IFPA Australia New Zealand as a part of its International Women’s Day Spotlight which was published on LinkedIn in March. When asked for her advice for the next generation of women, here’s what she offered:
“Pair ambition with disciplined thinking and action. Some of the most impactful growth in this industry comes from courageous decisions, but those decisions are strongest when grounded in clear thinking, curiosity and a willingness to test, learn and refine.
“Finally, invest in leading yourself as much as you lead others. Be clear on your values, visualize the impact you want to make, and commit to continuous improvement. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you and never underestimate the power of authenticity and kindness.”
Applications for the next Leadership Program Class will open in May of 2026.
