A.I. helping MR Farms boost efficiency
MR Farms is taking a bold step into the future by adopting artificial intelligence to enhance its warehouse operations. Beginning this fall, MR Farms added advanced optical sorting machines to perfectly sort and weigh potatoes and carrots with speed and precision.
Equipped with a sophisticated mirror system and powerful lighting that eliminates shadows, the new machines perform a seamless 360-degree analysis of every vegetable.
High-resolution imaging combined with AI-driven software enables precise grading, with up to 10 customized categories for potatoes and 16 for carrots. The system evaluates five quality levels — including shape and color — ensuring superior product consistency while significantly reducing waste.
This technology also provides complete batch traceability and delivers higher yields due to the consistency of its AI-powered sorting process.
“We started last month with carrots and we are already seeing the benefits of this equipment,” said Dominic Riendeau, vice president of sales at MR Farms, which is based in Quebec. “By integrating AI, we can operate more efficiently, reduce waste, and deliver even higher-quality products to our customers” he added.
MR Farms, in conjunction with its U.S. partner, Hapco Farms, maintains a steady, year-round supply of fresh carrots to meet growing customer demand.
With operations based in Quebec and Old Town, FL, the company has made significant investments in advanced technology and equipment to ensure consistent quality and reliability for customers across the Midwest and East Coast.
“With our Florida and Canadian carrot crops, we are growing closer to our customer locations, year-round,” said Eric Scannelli, COO of Hapco Farms. “With this new technology, our customers are getting better quality product on a consistent basis.”
Both facilities offer flexible packing options under the MR Farms and Fresh from the Start brands, as well as private label programs tailored to customer needs.
Available packaging includes one-, two-, three- and five-pound retail bags, along with jumbo packs designed for foodservice clients.
With these investments, MR Farms and Hapco Farms have strengthened their commitment to innovation and sustainability, positioning themselves as leaders in emerging technology to advance efficiency and product consistency.
