Stone fruit and berry importers expressed optimism as the Chilean season in North America gained momentum. Cherry production was another bright spot as increased volume was resulting in more retail promotions. Meanwhile, importers of Chilean grapes were anticipating a season with good volume and good quality.

The Florida Department of Citrus was pulling out all the marketing stops for the 1992-93 season, with a large crop, very good quality and smaller-sized fruit. Television advertising for fresh grapefruit, oranges and specialty fruit was driving traffic into supermarkets by featuring what the DOC described as “hot prices.”

Purdue University’s School of Agriculture reached a milestone when it enrolled 2,954 undergraduate students to become the largest single college of agriculture in the United States. Purdue, located in West Lafayette, IN, had experienced an annual increase in enrollment every year for the previous 14 years. About 60 percent of the students came from non-farm backgrounds and about 25 percent were women.

Santa Claus came to the rescue of 200 girls living in an orphanage in Kearny, NJ, after 30 bundles of Christmas trees the girls had planned to sell as a fund-raiser were stolen. Produce man Fred H. Valsing Sr. of South Orange, NJ, and New York not only replaced the 140 trees, he contributed Maine potatoes and frozen french fries for the youngsters’ Christmas dinner. The girls, who ranged in age from 5 to 16, were able to raise $2,500 from the sale of the donated trees.

The final resting place of Johnny Appleseed was located after extensive research in Allen County, IN, according to a report made at the annual meeting of the Illinois State Horticultural Society. The grave was identified in St. Joseph Township, IN, on the east side of the St. Joseph River on land owned by the Roebuck family.
