Gills rolls out clamshell pack
Oxnard, CA-based Gills Onions, a leading processor of fresh red and yellow onions, has converted its retail line of fresh onion products from zip-lock bags into clamshell packaging with resealable lids.
The newly launched product line features breathable under- film technology to lock in freshness while sealing in onion aroma. Included in the product line are 10-ounce diced yellow or red onions, eight-ounce sliced yellow or red onions and a 10-ounce celery and onion diced mix.
Nelia Alamo, director of sales and marketing for Gills Onions, said that all five items were developed to capture the growing market for consumer convenience items. "Bulk onions are labor-intensive for consumers and all research indicates consumers are seeking time and money-saving ways to serve fresh onions," Ms. Alamo said. We've redesigned the product line to offer consumers five ready-to-serve, 100 percent usable onion products. The innovative packaging includes high-quality graphics and easy-to-use recipes.
The shelf life of the clamshell packs 16 days after processing is the same as that of the previously used zip-lock bags, Ms. Alamo said.
Gill Onions went to clamshells out of demand from retailers, Ms. Alamo said. The clamshells display a lot nicer and stack easier, she said. The zip-lock bags were longer and the clamshells allow three facings on the shelf. The clamshell packaging allows retailers to maximize space while effectively building sales of high-demand consumer items, Ms. Alamo said.
The company worked on converting to new packaging, and in concert with that has ramped up sales efforts. With the new packaging, we have a new line [in Oxnard, CA] with more capacity, Ms. Alamo said. Bags were run on the same line as diced onions for foodservice and we had maxed out our capacity.
All of Gills Onions processing and packing takes place in Oxnard. The company consolidates mushrooms daily in Salinas and Los Angeles and seasonally in Yuma, AZ.
The company spent nearly a year perfecting the film and getting the right package, Ms. Alamo said. The conversion to clamshells began June 1 and has been well received, Ms. Alamo said.
Weve spent a great deal of time examining the marketplace, and two of the cost-critical factors were the products size and packaging, Ms. Alamo said. The 10- ounce size and resealable packaging answer consumers need for items that are convenient and ready to eat.
The new retail line is available year round from Oxnard, Los Angeles and Salinas, and seasonally from Yuma. Shelf organizers, point-of-purchase support and ad programs are available.
