George Sadoian of Sadoian Bros. dies at 89
Grower-shipper George Sadoian of Sadoian Bros. in Dinuba, CA, died Oct. 6. He was 89.
A former chairman of both the California Grape & Tree Fruit League and the California Table Grape Commission, Mr. Sadoian was a well-known figure in the fresh fruit industry.
He was born in Lynn, MA, and moved to California, where his father bought a 40-acre fig and grape ranch in Dinuba, in 1920. As a teenager in the 1930s, Mr. Sadoian and his younger brothers worked shipping fresh figs to the East Coast.
He graduated from Orosi High School in 1936 and attended Fresno State College, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
He married Isabelle Harikian in 1941.
At the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Sadoian was drafted and served in the Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India theater, attaining the rank of captain before his discharge in 1946.
He returned to the Dinuba area and founded the family business with brothers Zay and Vasken, growing, packing and shipping fresh figs, table grapes, plums, peaches and nectarines.
Mr. Sadoian served as chairman of the California Grape & Tree Fruit League, chairman of the California Table Grape Commission and on affiliated committees for both organizations.
He served for 12 years as a trustee on the Dinuba High School Board and was a trustee of the Dinuba Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Dinuba Rotary Club, a commander of the Knights of Vartan and a longtime member of the Armenian General Benevolent Union.
Mr. Sadoian is survived by his wife, Isabelle; three sons Phil and his wife, Margaret, of Dinuba, Ken and his wife, Chris, of Gig Harbor, WA, and Cliff and his wife, Debbie, of Dinuba; five grandchildren Justin, Julie, Brittany, Jared, and Leah; three brothers Zay of Dinuba, Vasken of Fresno and Harry of Fresno.
A service was held Oct. 12 at the Dinuba Presbyterian Church, followed by a graveside service at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba. Memrial contributions may be made to the Dinuba Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
