Frieda's salutes produce managers on Love Your Produce Manager Day
Frieda's Specialty Produce encourages shoppers and retailers to show appreciation for produce managers April 2, the national Love Your Produce Manager Day.
"Produce Managers are your 'fresh advisors,'" Karen Caplan, president and chief executive officer of Frieda's, said in a press release. "Whether you need to locate some purple asparagus, pick the perfect papaya or get usage ideas for Cape gooseberries, your produce managers can help you explore and find your new favorite produce item.
"After all, none of those items would be in your stores at all if it weren't for the conversation produce managers have with their shoppers," Caplan said in the release.
This year, Frieda's launched a social media giveaway campaign to encourage shoppers to show their appreciation for their produce managers from March 25 through April 2. For a chance to win a prize for themselves and their produce manager, shoppers can post a shout-out to their favorite produce manager on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with hashtag #LYPM. Three sets of winners will be announced by Frieda's on April 3.
As featured in Chase's Calendar of Events, Love Your Produce Manager Day began in 2012 in honor of Frieda's 50th anniversary. Love Your Produce Manager aims to shine the spotlight on produce managers who play a key role in making a variety of unique fruits and vegetables available to U.S. supermarkets.
In 1962, a shopper walked into a Salt Lake City supermarket and asked the produce manager for "Chinese Gooseberries." The produce managers asked his buyer, and the buyer contacted specialty produce purveyor Frieda Caplan, founder of Frieda's, who had just received the first U.S. shipment of Chinese Gooseberries, which were later named kiwifruit. If that produce manager hadn't asked, kiwifruit might not be the well-known and well-loved fruit it is today.
