FreshPoint buys produce distributors
Houston-based Sysco Corp. announced that its FreshPoint produce subsidiary bought City Produce Inc., a leading independent produce distributor in Texas' Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Harlingen, foodservice markets, and Thomas Bros. Produce Inc., an independent produce distributor in Oklahoma.
Terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
"The addition of City Produce and Thomas Brothers is a significant milestone for FreshPoint," Sysco Vice President and FreshPoint President and Chief Executive Officer Brian M. Sturgeon said in a statement. "Both of these companies are market leaders and will allow our distribution reach to expand into the Oklahoma, Arkansas and central Texas foodservice markets."
City Produce, based in Austin, TX, and founded in 1981, had 2005 sales of $43 million. Steven Scruggs will remain president of the operation.
Oklahoma City-based Thomas Bros. Produce, begun in 1999, had 2005 sales of $34 million. Company founder Mike Thomas will continue as president.
