Fresh Start Marketing selling onions from a great atmosphere
ST. LOUIS — An elegant stained glass mosaic tops the large display windows at the offices of Fresh Start Marketing LLC. The 110-year-old colored glass in this old St. Louis neighborhood on Macklind Avenue reflects a gentler, more formal era. Many of the buildings, including this one, are crafted from dark red brick.
The cozy atmosphere of the well-kept old building is warmed by the presence of black bear and elk hides on the walls. The beautiful pieces are gifts from onion growers who are hunters in the wild Northwest.
Why did Fresh Start locate here when the company formed in 1999?
“It’s down the street from my house,” said John Parr, who started the company with his wife, Donna. Donna handles invoicing for the firm.
Parr has been in the produce business since 1971.
And why did he name his company “Fresh Start?”
The lawyer who did the paperwork to create the company suggested the name.
Common sense seems to abound in the business, which is primarily a buying broker of onions. Onions from all major growing areas are available 12 months a year from Fresh Start. In season, Parr and his staff also offer avocados, tomatoes and pumpkins.
Fresh Start has customers in 15 states. These customers are repackers, distributors, terminal market operators, chainstores and foodservice suppliers. “We also sell to other shippers.”
In 2013 Fresh Start sold 1,000 trailerloads of onions. Fresh Start salesman Mark Kerperien added, “Our reputation has picked us up” and improved business.
“The onion business last year was good,” Parr said. However, he noted that onions were difficult to procure during the worst of the winter weather. The markets are high in 2014, as was the case last year.
“There are fewer onion shippers” than in the past, Parr said, adding, “there are fewer of all kinds of shippers.
When The Produce News called the firm, Parr struggled on the telephone to get a truck. “Trucks are always tight,” he noted.
Bringing young blood to the Fresh Start sales staff is Alex Cronin, a recent graduate of Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis. Handling logistics for the company is Karen Kircher.
