Fresh Farms moving to Culiacan product in December
RIO RICO, AZ — This December, Fresh Farms, located here, will be starting with Culiacan eggplant, fresh pickles, green beans and green Bell peppers, according to Jerry Havel, director of sales and marketing.
In a mid-November interview, Havel said, “I think there will be a tight squash market to Christmas and a decent cuke market through Christmas.”
A lot of shippers of Mexican watermelons were to finish shipping by Dec.1, so a short watermelon market will become even more scarce. “There will be a very limited supply in December. The growing region is moving further south, and they will have a smaller supply than we have now.”
In late October, Havel said that Mexican watermelon prices approached record highs for the fall because August hurricanes caused damage through excessive rain. Late October prices in the range of 28 cents to 30 cents a pound for seedless watermelons were almost unheard-of. He wasn’t sure of the statistical all-time high price for late October but said this range had to be there, if not higher.
