Fresh Farms has strong spring program
RIO RICO, AZ — Beyond the current spring vegetable deal, the Mexican spring watermelon deal for Fresh Farms will begin in the first week of April, according to Jerry Havel, director of sales and marketing.
For Fresh Farms, the large-volume watermelon deal will run until July.
Havel said on Jan. 20 that it is “too early to tell when grapes will start. Typically, though, it is between May 1 and May 5.”
Havel said that exports account for about 15 to 20 percent of Fresh Farms’ grape sales. Mexican table grapes have been exported since Fresh Farms was founded nine years ago, and remain the company’s key export item.
European markets are key for the firm. Other important markets are Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Malaysia, New Zealand and India. Vietnam was a new Asian market for the firm last year.
Fresh Farms will also be handling a wide range of spring Mexican vegetables. Items include zucchini, yellow and grey squash, all the hard varieties, butternut, spaghetti, acorn and Kabocha, American and English cucumbers, green bell peppers, eggplant, grape tomatoes, green beans and fresh pickles.
“We have been doing vegetables since late September and will finish our vegetable season the middle to the end of May,” Havel said.
