The International Fresh-cut Produce Association in Alexandria, VA, is partnering with the Perishables Group, an independent consulting firm, to provide the fresh-cut produce industry with syndicated data reports that measure the performance of the total fresh-cut fruit and vegetable business at retail.
The new initiative -- sponsored by DuPont -- will provide association members with the first-ever picture of the total fresh-cut produce space, including UPC-coded product, as well as items sold by the pound and processed in the store.
The Perishables Group data set includes all UPC/fixed weight products and all random-weight/PLU/system 2 code products for both cut fruit and cut vegetables.
Fresh-cut produce represented 16 percent of total produce department sales in 2005, up from 15 percent in 2004. "The Perishables Group is the only source for a complete universe of fresh-cut point-of-sale syndicated data, and our new joint initiative will fill a void that has existed for years on benchmarking total sales in this industry," IFPA President Jerry Welcome said in a statement. "Until now, we've only been able to see a portion and not the totality of the industry - and we know it is growing at a significant rate. We're excited to be able to offer our members timely and insightful sales data and achieve our goal to be the 'go to' resource on fresh-cut business trends."
"As a company that offers many innovations to the fresh-cut produce industry - from crop protection products to enhanced food quality and safety to packaging that prolongs freshness - DuPont is pleased to sponsor this report," Rebecca Farabaugh, produce market segment leader, said in a statement. "We hope that the entire industry benefits from this important new information."
The Perishables Group will provide a state of the fresh-cut industry report at Fresh-Cut Expo 2006, April 26-29 in Baltimore. The report, composed of 2004-05 data, will be updated quarterly in 2006.
Association members will receive the quarterly reports in the form of an e-newsletter and be able to access the information through a password-protected portion of the IFPA web site.
In a statement, Bruce Axtman, president and chief executive officer of the Perishables Group, said, "Over the past two years, we've worked hard to develop a total understanding of the fresh-cut universe and we now have more than 30,000 individual items in that universe."
