Four Rivers Packing Co. has ‘plenty of colors and large jumbos’
This year’s onion crop for Four Rivers Packing Co. in Weiser, ID, was described by Ken Stewart, sales/operation manager, as one of “really good quality” with “plenty of colossals and large jumbos.”
Along with company President Sean Swanson, Stewart expressed optimism that the season will be a good one.
Management at Four Rivers Onion Packing In Weiser, ID: Jan Stewart, Brian Bachelder, Sean Swanson and Ken Stewart. Tracy Fowler is not pictured.“The crop size is average, with some excellent stands and some fairly average,” Stewart said in mid-September. “We started shipping on Aug. 10, and we are going to have plenty of colors and large jumbos. That could mean mediums might be tight, and we think it’s fair to say we anticipate having a large profile. What we’re seeing in the fields is across the board for all colors.”
Favorable growing and harvest conditions have resulted in good quality, and Stewart noted, “We haven’t seen any issues at all at this point.”
Last year’s hot market for reds has been repeated early on this year, and Stewart said, “They’ve had good demand for the past several years. Of course we’re seeing stronger demand now for medium yellows too as they’re not as plentiful.”
Four Rivers’ volume is 15-20 percent reds, with whites accounting for 5-7 percent and yellows making up the balance. Sales are primarily to foodservice and terminal markets, although Stewart said, “Our retail mix is increasing.” The onions are packed in 25-, 40- and 50-pound cartons as well as newly added consumer bags.
“The bagger upgrading is new to our shed this year and adds to our efficiencies,” Swanson said. Consumer sizes are 2-, 3- and 5-pounds. He and Stewart said ongoing challenges in securing labor are driving the decision to further automate at the shed level.
Swanson said there has been a new hire in the office, with Brandi Fluit joining the team as administrative assistant and shipping coordinator.
