Former CEO of Kings dies at 91
Allen I. Bildner, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Kings Super Markets (now Kings Food Market), died Feb. 5. He was 91.
The Bildner family owned and operated the supermarket chain for 52 years until 1988, when it was sold to Marks & Spencer. Kings was founded in 1936 in Long Island, NY, and was originally a value format, employing the slogan “Never Undersold.” The focus was broadened to include good customer service when Mr. Bildner took over operations from his father in 1956.
In the 1980s, the emphasis was placed squarely on quality with an eye toward offering the best perishables, and Mr. Bildner was said to be one of the first retailers to offer takeout meals and fresh-cut produce at Kings locations.
“We were saddened to hear of former Kings Food Markets founder and President Allen Bildner’s passing," said Judy Spires, current president and CEO. "Allen exuded a passion for excellence that is still a large part of our company today. As both leader and active community member, he made a significant impact on the lives of many here at Kings, both associates and customers alike, and will be missed dearly.”
Mr. Bildner was chairman of the Food Marketing Institute from 1986 to 1988, and was also founder and former chairman of the New Jersey Food Council.
He is survived by his sons, Rob and Jim, as well as a sister and five grandchildren.
