Eric Schwartz resigns from Dole Fresh Vegetables
Eric Schwartz, president of Salinas, CA-based Dole Fresh Vegetables, resigned from the company on Monday, March 3.
Dole Fresh Vegetables is a division of Dole Food Co. Inc., which is headquartered in Westlake Village, CA.
Mr. Schwartz said that the decision to leave was his and that it had been in the works for a couple of months. "This is a good move for me," he said. "There's nothing wrong with Dole. It's just that now's the time."
Mr. Schwartz said that he was treated "very well" by Dole, including in the transition period leading up to his departure.
Mr. Schwartz started with Dole Fresh Vegetables in 1998. For the first two years he was vice president of operations; he had been president for the past eight years.
Mr. Schwartz will stay on at Dole through March and will be succeeded by Ray DeRiggi, who will take on the duties of president of the division on March 17. Mr. DeRiggi had been in senior management at ConAgra before leaving in 2006.
Mr. Schwartz, 49, resides in Salinas with his wife, Tamara, and their three children. Mr. Schwartz said that he is weighing his options on what he'll do next. Two strong options involve working in senior level management. Only one of those two roles would be in the fresh produce industry, he said, adding that one choice may involve relocating out of the Salinas area. He said he'll "take his time and make sure" before making his decision.
In addition to his role with Dole, Mr. Schwartz has held numerous positions on fresh produce industry boards. He currently is vice chairman of the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement advisory board and has served on the board of directors of leafy greens and lettuce boards in Arizona and Salinas. He served on the board of directors of the former International Fresh-Cut Produce Association.
