Eclipse Berry Farms is in strawberries year-round
With production in Mexico and three California districts, Eclipse Berry Farms LLC in Los Angeles is in the strawberry business every day of the year, according to Suart Gilfenbain, a salesman with the company.
In California, Eclipse grows strawberries in Oxnard, Santa Maria and Watsonville. The Santa Maria program, which consists of 300 acres of Albion and Monterey strawberries, is new this year.
Stuart GilfenbainIn Watsonville, where Eclipse also grows Albion and Monterey varieties, the company has an acreage increase this year, Gilfenbain said.
In Oxnard, however, the company’s acreage is down somewhat. The main strawberry varieties grown by Eclipse in Oxnard are San Andreas, Radiance, Benecia and Monterrey.
Gilfenbain expected Florida to be pretty much finished with its strawberry harvest by mid- to late March, with most of Florida’s berries toward the end of that period to stay close to home.
“Central Mexico is basically done,” and a good part of the production in Baja California, Mexico, was being diverted to processing, he said. “So it is going to be time for Oxnard and Santa Maria.”
By the final week of March, he expected those two districts to be putting out “good numbers.” The Watsonville district would follow, with volume starting to build in May and come on strong in June.
“We are in it every day of the year in California,” Gilfenbain said. “Basically, we grow our Salinas crops for the late show. We grow our Santa Maria crops for the long haul,” with the harvest ongoing for 10 months out of the year.
On sales at Eclipse, along with Gilfenbain, are Rick Hearst and Ashley Chavira.
