DNE’s Florida grapefruit due for an early finish
Florida grapefruit from DNE World Fruit LLC, headquartered in Fort Pierce, FL, will finish two to three weeks earlier than in most years. Barbara Anderson, marketing promotions manager for the company, said all other citrus is expected to finish in a normal time frame.
“Currently, we are down to just grapefruit and Valencia juice oranges,” Anderson told The Produce News on March 20. “Most of late-season grapefruit is coming from the Indian River region, but we do have some coming from central and southwest Florida as well. Valencias are coming from both regions.”
DNE, she noted, introduced the “Baby O” Florida-grown Mandarin this season.
“The fruit was introduced in December and early January,” said Anderson. “The item was a big hit and we plan to increase our volume next season.”
As far as promotable items throughout the season, the company has promotions on most of its normal items, including Fallglos, Sunbursts tangerines, red and Star Ruby grapefruit, Florida Navels and all varieties of juice oranges.
“We are also looking forward to an early start this season on the imported easy peelers that should kick off in mid-May,” Anderson continued. “And we’re growing our volumes coming from Chile, South African, Australia, Uruguay and Peru. We’ll also have our normal Mexican lemon program starting in late July, which runs through November.”
