DNE citrus reaches peak of perfection
Dan Schatz, general manager at DNE World Fruit Sales, said the company’s fruit has reached the peak of perfection. “Our current fruit is at peak flavor and eats like candy,” he told The Produce News.
Bernard Egan & Co./DNE World Fruit Sales is the largest marketer of Florida fresh citrus and is one of the largest independently owned citrus marketers in the world. DNE is located in Fort Pierce, FL, and shipping operations outside of Florida are found in Texas, Arizona and California. An import sales office and shipping facility are also located in New Jersey.
“Throughout the spring, we have experienced excellent tasting citrus,” Schatz said of the current Florida crop. “Our sweetest grapefruit is harvested from trees in the Indian River region that are over 30 years old. The high brix has made for some great taste again this season. The exterior is not as clean as during the early season. But the great taste more than makes up for it. We like to say ‘It’s marked by the imprint of the leaves from the warm tropical breeze, marking it as the peak of ripeness.’”
DNE still has good supplies of Florida Indian River Red grapefruit as well as Valencia oranges. Grapefruit will be available into May and is marketed in bulk as well as five-, eight- and 10-pound bags. “Valencia oranges are the premier juice orange and will be available into June,” Schatz added. Valencias are available in four-, five- and eight-pound bags.
