Riggio remains a top option in Detroit

As an anchor tenant for the famed Detroit Produce Terminal, Riggio Distribution Co. is a trusted produce wholesaler servicing the Midwest, as well as Southern Ontario and parts of the South and East Coast.

The company’s customers include independent retail, chain retail, independent wholesale food service, broad line distributors, and food manufacturers. Riggio Distribution touches on all aspects of the produce industry, with a full selection of fresh fruits and vegetables which are shipped seven days a week to retail customers and foodservice customers. It sources product from all over the world by air, boat, truck, and train, and takes pride in sourcing locally grown product as much as possible when available.

riggio“We are a quality wholesaler that is a valuable partner to our customers and their suppliers,” said Dominic Riggio, president of the company. “At Riggio Distribution, we effectively serve as the buying and procurement team for our customers, not only providing quality product but also market information including promotional opportunities, logistics from shipping point as well as locally, quality control including food safety regulatory support and product inspection, plus the list goes on and on.”

For instance, Riggio Distribution also serves its suppliers as a conduit to markets difficult to reach from shipping point, as a forward distribution resource to assist in daily inventory control at both corporate and independent customers, as well as an efficient path to the market with new products that might take a long time to be set up for corporate accounts.

“Business in 2021 was similar to 2020, in that we stuck to our fundamentals as a produce wholesaler,” Riggio said. “As the world around us was constantly changing and things that we could normally control were not as much in our control, we stayed disciplined and focused on what has led to our success over the years.”

In other words, inventory control, attention to payables and receivables, and providing value to its customers and suppliers, were just a few of the things that it focused on daily to best position itself to capitalize on the many opportunities that arise in the business.

Working in Detroit has its advantages for the company as well and Riggio is proud to be one of the original produce families that helped make the Detroit Produce Terminal what it is today.

“The independent retailers, wholesalers, and distributors are all very competitive for the best price but more importantly the best product,” he said.

As the calendar turned to 2022, Riggio Distribution Co. was dealing with the challenge of its inbound logistics from shipping point, something causing havoc with many in the industry. But as veterans in the field, the company does its best to work around it and ensure its customers never know there were any issues.

Looking to the new year, Riggio noted that while he always has initiatives for growth in the works, the company’s general strategy has been to remain nimble enough to capitalize on opportunities.

“There are always opportunities right around the corner and we like to be ready to step up to the challenge on short notice,” he said.
