America’s “favorite sweet onion” will be served at “America’s Greatest Race” this year. The Vidalia Onion Committee announced that Vidalia onions are on the official menu for the 2021 Kentucky Derby and will be featured in several dishes served to patrons of the "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports."
 

“It’s not like there is citrus on the tree and we can give you a number” on percentage of crop that was lost in Texas’ February freeze, said Jeff Brechler.

In contrast, Brechler’s onions are nestled in the ground. They were planted at different times this winter and so the bulbs were of different maturities when winter’s blitz on south Texas commenced on Valentine’s Day — and stayed through much of that week.

Because The Onion House LLC has over the years adjusted its Texas onion planting schedule to the overall supply situation, Don Ed Holmes, the firm’s owner, said his company dodged the large degree of losses suffered by some Texas onion growers.

Owyhee Produce's U.S.-grown tearless, red, sweet onion, dubbed Wicked Sweet, is currently available as an addition to its year-round onion program. The first year kicked off strong, launching in 141 retail stores.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Vidalia Onion Committee announced that the pack date for the 2021 season is April 19. The organizations are also celebrating the 35th anniversary of legislation that helped to make Vidalia onions beloved by millions of fans across the country. A rite of spring for its legends of devotees, the announcement of the pack date means shoppers will soon be able to purchase Vidalia onions, which are only available for a limited time each year.

With the Tampico district in Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas ramping up onion production, Utah-based Onions 52 has moved into a time frame in which it can offer its customers plenty of options.

“March through June are some of the most exciting months for Onions 52,” said Clay Jones, who is director of retail sales for the onion specialist. “This is one of the few timeframes when we have multiple growing areas in production. This is a distinct competitive advantage strategy for Onions 52 to maintain and diversify supply.”
