The Vidalia Onion Committee welcomed the 2022 season by announcing the sweet onions are again included on the official menu of the Kentucky Derby. Featured in the Kentucky Derby’s on-site and at-home menus, Vidalia onions add in the sweet and versatile flavor they’re known for to a variety of Derby-worthy dishes.   

Gills Onions recently enlisted FoodMix Marketing Communications, a leading food marketing agency, to launch an Onionology campaign. Designed to showcase the intricate details that go into raising the best onions, the Onionology campaign highlighted everything from soil to the company's emissions-free electricity.

On March 31 a structure fire significantly damaged a large portion of some of the largest fresh onion packing facilities in south Texas.

“Last night a massive fire overtook our onion packing facility," Rio Fresh Inc. said in a statement. "Our family and team are devastated over our loss, but we remain thankful.

Keystone Fruit Marketing, a division of Progressive Produce, is known for its year-round sweet onion program. The Vidalia onion is an integral part of that program, and the company is anxious to get started this year.

LG Herndon Jr. Farms has partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation for the 2022 Vidalia onion season. This partnership will have two periods during the Vidalia onion season where the onions will be shipping with special co-branded packaging that highlights the work of the foundation, the Memorial Day Promotion (May 16-30) and the July 4th Promotion (June 20-July 4).

Don Ed Holmes sold 50-pound sacks of jumbo yellow onions for $30 each last week. “That’s the best market I can remember at this time of year for a long time. The last time it was this high was 2007,” said the owner of The Onion House, which is headquartered in Weslaco, TX.
