The California citrus industry is answering the call to strengthen fresh produce food-safety research. Citrus producers from across the Golden State are making a collective $500,000 contribution to Center for Produce Safety’s research capital campaign to fund produce-specific food-safety research.

Their funds will support CPS’s work to identify industry’s top produce safety questions, call on researchers to answer them, then transfer learnings to industry, government, public health and other stakeholders.

There will be a good supply of both imported and domestic clementines available into 2022. The market is steady with some very attractive promotional pricing. The two- and three-pound bags are ideal to promote in ad flyers and will greatly boost sales for the produce department. The five-pound boxes are also a very good tonnage item.

Sunkist Growers and Tajín Seasonings have created an innovative and exciting display for the Rose Parade Floatfest in Pasadena, CA, on Jan. 1 and 2.  The Sunkist-Tajín collaboration will extend to in-store promotions at select retail locations with sampling events and displays.

The recent rain and expected cold spell in the California citrus belt were welcomed by growers in the region. The current in the drought in the area tops grower concerns, and the needed rain should have positive effects on the water supply while also improving fruit size and quality.

The Cold Hardy Citrus Association, a collaborative group of more than 75 growers, handlers, processors and allied businesses of all sizes, with groves and packing facilities throughout the Florida Panhandle, eastern Alabama and southern Georgia, will debut their newly created regional brand — Sweet Valley Citrus — at the New York Produce Show Dec. 15.
