Agrokasa, Peru’s second largest grower/shipper/exporters of avocados, has completed a three year water project that turned sand dunes into productive crop land and is providing irrigation water for the Ica, Peru region.

The company recently released a video that outlined the project and its benefits for the region. This initiative was launched in 2019 after the company won the bid to turn wastewater from the city of Ica into water suitable for irrigation.

Dayka & Hackett, one of Frutura’s investments in the international fresh fruit business, has hired Stephen Fink as vice president of avocados. Fink, formerly vice president of North American sales for Mission Produce, will spearhead Dayka & Hackett’s introduction of avocados to the U.S. and global markets.

By early-August, Peru had shipped nearly 200 million pounds of avocados to the U.S. market with the expectation that it would ship another 100 million pounds during the final two months of its season, smashing its previous record by nearly 50 percent.

After months and months of stratospheric FOB pricing on avocados, big volumes were available in the U.S. market in July leading to much lower prices with promotional opportunities expected to stretch far into the future.

As more and more points of origin increase their supplies of avocados to the United States, the marketing situation is being impacted like never before.

Avocado exporters in Colombia have met their ambitious expectations concerning their shipments to the U.S. market over the past 12 months, and all indications are that the exponential growth will continue for the upcoming season.
