For the past five years, Cruz Carrera has been a part of the Five Crowns team and its expansion of its asparagus program.

“As a year-round shipper our supply is sourced from Mexico, Peru, Canada and domestically” he said. “Our domestic production comes from Washington, Idaho and Michigan.”

Carrera, who wears the director of asparagus sales title, said that despite industry projections being down from both Peru and Mexico, total asparagus volume for the Brawley, CA-based company will once again be greater than the year before.

It was 22 years ago, that husband and wife team Frank and Ana Ramos founded The Perishable Specialist Inc., which, of course, refers to the company’s expertise as a customs broker clearing fresh produce shipped into the United States.

“We continue to grow a little bit each year,” said Frank, repeating his often-heard refrain. “We are truly blessed.”

While weather issues have negatively impacted the Peruvian asparagus deal and its expected exports to the U.S. market, Coachella, CA-based Prime Time International still sees positive growth in its asparagus program over the long run.

On April 1, 2023, Patricia Compres and Maria Bermudez celebrated their 10th anniversary since launching Advance Customs Brokers & Consulting.

“It’s been a very successful first 10 years,” Compres said. “We have a great team behind us and many loyal customers that keep us thriving.”

Though the Peruvian asparagus deal is very challenging this year with less overall volume, Square 1 Farms is anticipating an increase in its own offerings.

“Despite the many challenges the industry has been facing with asparagus this year, we’ve seen growth in overall market share and volume to the North American retail sectors,” said Tim Ryan, company founder and president.

With increases in volume from both its imported and domestic sources, Maurice A. Auerbach Inc. is experiencing double digit growth in its year-round asparagus program.
