For the past several years, Peruvian asparagus acreage has not been increasing as some growers have switched to other crops. But Alpine Fresh CEO Walter Yager believes that a solid season plus the elimination of the mandatory fumigation requirement on U.S. asparagus imports from Peru could prove to be a renaissance for the commodity.

“For about 50 percent of the year, Peru produces better quality asparagus than Mexico,” he said. “If you eliminate fumigation, Peru will be able to provide better quality for nine months of the year.”

In an effort to better serve its customers in U.S. ports of entry around the country, Miami-based Advance Customs Brokers International LLC has entered into a strategic partnership with two other customs brokers.

The Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association represents over 90 percent of the fresh asparagus imported and consumed within the United States. The association importers are preparing for a peak season that is managed by proactive planning and strategic marketing. 

“In today’s marketplace, asparagus trade can only prevail through forethought and strategic planning,” said Priscilla Lleras, executive director of PAIA. “Experience and information are foundational key essentials to persevering in today’s economy.”

The Michigan asparagus season concluded one week earlier than usual with ample volume available for summer festivities. To drive sales, the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board enacted marketing strategies, including retail promotions, influencer marketing and digital campaigns that further emphasized the importance of buying local and how that translates into supporting communities one spear at a time.

The Michigan asparagus season is underway and this fan favorite is arriving in stores about a week earlier than normal due to warmer winter. Currently, volume is on track with thick and tender asparagus ready to take center stage on plates and in bowls nationwide. 

Asparagus is known as a springtime vegetable, but it is also available year-round and grows throughout the world with imports coming from Peru and Mexico. Once the seeds are planted, asparagus requires three years to be established before it reaches maturity. The plants can live up to 20 years while they continue to produce.
