Colorful Harvest debuts pack
SALINAS, CA -- Colorful Harvest, based here, has rolled out packaging that it anticipates will help it move more berries in the marketplace while offering conveniences to its customers.
The company has rolled out a display-ready bulk eight-pounder box with a safety seal and a berry combo pack that is a 34-ounce clamshell pack in two- count or four-count configurations.
"We'll pack the first run in the second week of December" in California, said Doug Ranno, Colorful Harvest's chief operating officer and managing partner. "We think we can do it almost year round. We know that there's [customer] interest." Colorful Harvest's strawberry acreage has increased in every growing region, Mr. Ranno said.
Strawberries in the patented display-ready safety-seal box can be packed in bulk format or with a liner placed in the bottom of the box and packed in stem or bulk format. It also can be packed with a liner separating layers. Colorful Harvest's new packaging will first be put to use with its December strawberry harvests in Florida and Oxnard, CA.
One hundred ninety of Colorful Harvest's new safety-seal bulk eight-pound boxes can fit on a single pallet, while "the typical eight-pounder fits many fewer boxes on a pallet," Mr. Ranno said. "We save the customer and the consumer both a lot of money. We're getting 30-40 percent more boxes per pallet."
At first, Colorful Harvest will roll out the berry combo pack using strawberries and blueberries. The company also will use raspberries and blackberries in the combo pack.
