Coastline's Grant Oswalt dies at 50
Grant Oswalt, a senior sales representative at Salinas, CA-based Coastline, died Friday evening, Jan. 11, after a brief illness.
Mr. Oswalt spent some 25 years in the fresh produce industry, having joined the Coastline sales team in October 2005, where he was a senior sales representative. Mr. Oswalt came to Coastline from produce broker Fresh Network in Salinas.
Prior to that, he had been a sales manager at Duda's California operations, Salyer American Fresh Foods Inc., Capurro Farms and Apio Inc., all in California.
Phil Adrian of Coastline described Mr. Grant as "a good friend who was well liked by the staff."
Stephen Timsak, sales manager at Moss Landing, CA-based Capurro Farms, had been friends with Mr. Oswalt for more than 20 years and was the best man at Mr. Oswalt's wedding 18 years ago. They had met when both worked at Oshita Marketing in Salinas in the late 1980s. Mr. Timsak said that his most pleasurable time in sales was working with Mr. Oswalt.
"He was a wonderful individual," Mr. Timsak said. "He was very funny and very intelligent. There was never a dull moment."
Kris Capurro of Capurro Farms not only was Mr. Grant's boss at Capurro Farms, but the two also socialized together outside work, Mr. Capurro said. "He had a very good rapport with customers and the staff," Mr. Capurro said. "He was a people person."
Deanne Cagnacci of Capurro Farms, where Mr. Oswalt worked for about 14 years, said that he was "always very professional and a very nice guy."
Mr. Grant is survived by his wife of 18 years, Lynn; his 11-year-old son Blake; his mother, Helena; and his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jean.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, Jan. 25 at Struve & Laporte Funeral Chapel. An informal celebration of Mr. Oswalt's life will be held at Portobello's Restaurant Jan. 26 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Grant Oswalt Memorial Fund established at First National Bank, 1001 S. Main Street, Salinas, CA, 93901.
