Christopher Ranch, citing strong demand, sees room for growth in organic category
Demand for domestically grown organic product is so strong that Christopher Ranch has trouble keeping up.
In its extensive organic line, Christopher Ranch, headquartered in Gilroy, CA, offers fresh whole garlic bulbs in bulk and packaged. Its organic garlic line also includes peeled, roasted and processed garlic, as well as chopped, crushed and roasted garlic puree, which are shelf-stable in jars.
“Our organic line also consists of shallots, elephant garlic, ginger, pearl onions, cipolline onions and boiler onions,”
Christopher Ranch organic fresh whole bulb garlic.said Patsy Ross, vice president of marketing for the company.
“We are a grower, packer and shipper,” she continued. “Christopher Ranch has been growing organic garlic since 1997, and our organic line is produced in California.”
Retailers and wholesalers are the company’s primary customers, but Ms. Ross said it is seeing increased interest from foodservice and industrial sectors. The company distributes nationally.
“The demand for our organic items continues to increase,” said Ms. Ross. “On average, we increase our acreage by about 10 percent per year, but our organic sales increase by at least that percentage every year. Despite the annual increases we still cannot keep up with the demand for domestically grown organic items.”
For more than 50 years the Christopher family has been growing superior California garlic from its privately owned farms in Gilroy.
The company takes great pride in providing the highest quality, most flavorful and healthy garlic available today. The multi-generation firm has a strong customer base across all segments of the food industry, including processing customers.
Both its conventional and organic lines of products are sold across the country. The company also handles organic products produced by other growing partners.
Ms. Ross said the company introduced a couple of new items last year in its organic line.
“New in 2012 was our 32-ounce [container] of organic chopped garlic,” said Ms. Ross. “Also newly introduced is our three-ounce header bag of organic ginger. This complements our other organic specialty items.
“We are also excited about adding organic garlic braids last year,” she continued. “Our goal is to have year-round availability of domestically grown garlic, shallots and elephant garlic.”
Christopher Ranch’s organic garlic is 100 percent natural and contains more vitamins, minerals, proteins and amino acids than imported varieties according to the National Food Laboratory.
All of its organic products are certified by CCOF, a leading organic certifier.
Ms. Ross said that the company has made its organic program a priority for more than the past decade, and it plans to continue to focus strongly on the category.
“There is definitely additional room for growth in this segment of our business,” she said. “And Christopher Ranch plans to continue to work toward meeting the strong and growing demand for California-grown organic garlic.”
