PHILADELPHIA -- Chilean fruit import statistics for the ports of the Delaware River have been released by the Chilean & American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia. The statistics are for fiscal year 2006, which runs from November 2006 to June 2007.
Statistics are kept by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service and are based on fumigations.
Chile exported 43,856,543 cases of fruit to the United States on 93 break- bulk vessels via the ports of the Delaware River. Sixty-six percent of the Chilean fruit that was fumigated was treated in Philadelphia, while 34 percent was precleared in Chile. Of the fruit treated in Philadelphia, 27.7 million cases were grapes.
Chilean kiwifruit ranked a very distant second at 681,000 cases, followed by 278,000 cases of clementines.
Of the more than 15 million cases of Chilean fruit precleared for the U.S. market in Chile, apples ranked first at 2,755,925, blueberries were second at 2,679,396 and plums were third at 1.85 million.
