Capurro Marketing hires Kevin Murphy as president
Moss Landing, CA-based Capurro Marketing LLC has hired Kevin Murphy to the newly created position of president of the company, effective Sept. 6.
Mr. Murphy was formerly the executive vice president of strategic development for Salinas, CA-based Fresh Express. During his more than 15-year tenure at Fresh Express, Mr. Murphy took on many roles that included responsibility for helping the company develop future strategies in addition to being in charge of operations and marketing for the firm. Mr. Murphy played an integral part in the management team that helped grow Fresh Express from a several-million-dollar firm to its existing size. Prior to working at Fresh Express, he worked in market research and agricultural land development.
As president of fresh vegetables at grower-packer-shipper Capurro Marketing, Mr. Murphy will oversee and manage the company's daily operations from the farm to the market. His presence marks the first time in the family-owned companys 81-year history that its operations will be overseen by someone outside the family, said third-generation partner John Manfre. The companys other four partners are Frank L. Capurro (second-generation partner), and Mike Manfre, Frank W. Capurro and Kris Capurro, all third-generation partners. The family partners will remain active in the business and in the industry, John Manfre said.
"This addition will allow us to continue our efforts with current and future projects, as well as long-term planning," John Manfre said. We can assess where were going and position the company.
Mr. Murphy brings much experience to the role and the partners are happy to bring in a fresh perspective on things, John Manfre said. While Mr. Murphys primary function is to oversee and manage daily operations, he and the partners will implement new ideas as we go, John Manfre said.
Mr. Murphy said that Capurro Marketing has a good reputation and a good customer base. I wouldnt have joined unless there was an opportunity for growth, Mr. Murphy said.
Mr. Murphy left Fresh Express two months ago. He found Chiquitas acquisition of Fresh Express including bringing in a new president agreeable, but felt that Capurros offer was good for my career and a good opportunity.
Mr. Murphy was born and raised in South Africa. He has an undergraduate degree in agricultural economics and a master in business administration degree from the Edinburgh Business School in Scotland. He is married with two children and lives in Californias Monterey County.
